October 13, 2019: One Thing

[I hold up a branch] Imagine it is winter and it is snowing. Imagine this branch covered with snow and the snow is heavy. At some point there is ONE snowflake that lands on the branch that causes it to break.   One flake makes the difference.

Water is very hot at 211 degrees. But water boils at 212 degrees. One degree difference changes the water.

One flake, one degree, one thing. For most of us, the difference between having an OK day and a great day is one thing. That ‘thing’ is usually different and it often changes every day, but generally it is only one thing that make us come alive . . . or not.

Some times that change happens because of what someone does to us, or for us . . . but usually the big difference comes from us doing something. And it doesn’t take lots of things, often it is it just action that can make our day better. One act of kindness. Simply doing one thing can change you and the people around you. It might be a smile or saying hello, but generally it is DOING something that causes a reaction. Doing something positive. For example, picking up a piece of litter, holding the door for the next person, or volunteering yourself to get involved.

The man in gospel who was cured along with the other nine. He realized he was cured and he praised God. How? By coming back to thank Jesus. One thing. He didn’t have to, but he did and not only was he healed but as Jesus said, he was also saved.

Most of us, have fairly decent lives. For example, good families, good health, good schools, good places to live. And we can be like the 9 men in the gospel who do nothing, or we can be like the one man who does something . . . he praises God and thanks Jesus.

And how do we praise God and thank Jesus? By doing one thing. This is SIGN ME UP weekend. It is your chance to praise God and to thank Jesus for all the blessings in your life. How? By stepping up and volunteering to do one thing in the liturgy.

Oh you can be the ones who take things for granted, always want someone else to do things for you, never push yourself . . . or you can do ONE thing. Sign up. Make a difference.

This your church, your community. All of you young and old . . . can do nothing . . . or you can recognize how God has blest you and volunteer to do one thing to GIVE BACK to God and to the community.
